Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is a method of producing
complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation.
The word nidra means to sleep. However, Yoga Nidra is a state of deep
relaxation with
awareness; not true sleeping.
During Yoga Nidra, verbal instructions
are given that promote physical relaxation yet
keeps the mind active through the hearing channel. The mind progressively
withdraws
from the external world, and continues inward to the unconscious mind. As the
unconscious
or true self appears, one becomes aware of one’s true wholeness. This creates
the
opportunity for inner healing.
Yoga Nidra practice involves ten
sequenced steps: preparation, initial relaxation, affirmation,
rotation of consciousness, sense perception within the body, breathing,
visualization,
affirmation, and closure. Time length will vary.
After gentle stretching, rest in
savasana
(corpse pose) with support under knees and head.
Hips are relaxed with toes pointing outward. Arms are comfortably by the sides
with palms up.
A light blanket is suggested for warmth as the body cools quickly with the
relaxation. Eyes
should be gently closed, Lighting is dim and the room is quiet. No food for an
hour is
recommended.
One may also be seated in a comfortable
chair with the spine straight and
lower back in its natural curve.
